10.16.2006 ERASE HATE & ACCEPT DIVERSITY @ Roosevelt University

 Matthew Shepard Vigil
Plus, Judy Shepard, his mom speaks.

Judy Shepard, mother of the late Matthew Shepard, will discuss ways people can erase hate and accept diversity at a free lecture sponsored by Roosevelt University on Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorium theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress.

In 1998, Matthew Shepard, 21, was tortured and brutally murdered. His two attackers left him for dead near the University of Wyoming, where he was a student. The convicted murderers are serving life sentences in prison, but were not charged with a hate crime because there were no appropriate statutes at the time. Since Matthew’s death, his parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, have created The Matthew Shepard Foundation to honor their son.

This is event is free! The Center on Halsted Anti-Violence Project will hold a vigil from 5:30-6:30pm at Spertus Lounge, at Roosevelt University, 430 S. Michigan Ave., 2nd floor. For information on the vigil call 773-472-6469. For more information on Judy’s appearance, call 312-341-3510 or see www.roosevelt.edu .

"A person as caring and loving as our son Matt would be overwhelmed by what this incident has done to the hearts and souls of people around the world. Matthew was the type of person, that if this had happened to another person, would have been the first on the scene to offer his help, his hope and his heart to the family."    Dennis Shepard

"Give your kids a hug and don't let a day go by without telling them you love them."  Judy Shepard
