ART FOR AWARENESS April 13-15-2007

DATE: Sunday, April 15
TIME: 3-7:30pm
LOCATION: Chicago Filmmakers
5243 N. Clark, Chicago
WHAT : This film festival will feature three amazing documentaries and speakers following each film to foster discussion…
Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes: Examines gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the
lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist. Conceived as a
“loving critique”,  Hurt tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in
today’s hip-hop.
Turning a Corner: Tells the stories of people involved in the sex trade and their efforts to raise
public awareness of systemic injustice and promote needed reforms. This groundbreaking film
recounts their survival and triumph over homelessness, violence and discrimination, and gives
rare insights into Chicago’s sex trade industry culture.
Transition to Survivor: The Chicago debut of the powerful documentary. In this film, sexual
assault survivors tell powerful and emotional stories about their personal experiences, from
reporting the crime to dealing with the aftermath of the violence. They describe how they coped
with what has been called a “silent crime”, as many people may not report their attack.
