Mariachi Herencia de México, an ensemble of students from Chicago’s immigrant barrios, is mariachi music’s most exciting newcomer. The group scored a surprise hit with their debut album of traditional Mexican music, Nuestra Herencia (Our Heritage), which hit #2 on the iTunes Latin chart, defying a music industry trend and pointing to a revival in recorded mariachi music. The album scored a 2017 Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album category demonstrating that this group of students have the talent, training and bravado to hold their own with the best in the world.

The famed multiphonic singers from Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform traditional temple music and mystical masked dances. This extraordinary performance features elaborate costumes, traditional instruments and unique multiphonic singing wherein the monks simultaneously intone three notes of a chord. The Drepung Loseling monks are particularly renowned for this unique singing. They also utilize traditional instruments such as 10-foot-long dung-chen horns, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpets. Rich brocade costumes and masked dances, such as the Dance of the Sacred Snow Lion, add to the exotic splendor.

This production is a tender, joyful, passionate and humorous interpretation of Matisse’s three permutations of the painting starting with Le bonheur de vivre followed by the two versions of La Danse – danced to original musical composition by John Levis and poetry by Karl Mullen. Koresh Dance Company was founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Ronen (Roni) Koresh. Known for its engaging performance and technically superb dancers, the company has been hailed internationally, touring to destinations including Spain, Turkey, Israel, South Korea, Mexico, and Guatemala.
